Välkommen till ArkDes årliga forskningskonferens:
Hemmet, kollektivet och radikal modernism

Den 14 december bjuder ArkDes in till en halvdagskonferens. Våra fem gästforskare kommer att lyfta nya kritiska perspektiv med fokus på feministiska aktivistgrupper, kvinnor i arkitekturdebatten, transnationella arkitekturprojekt och nya läsningar av den svenska modernismen med utgångspunkt i vår samling.

ArkDes arbetar just nu med att utveckla en helt ny samlingsutställning där vi äntligen får möjlighet att visa upp våra samlingar i sin helhet. Som en del av projektet har vi bjudit in fem gästforskare som med olika utgångspunkter lyfter nya narrativ bland museets över fyra miljoner objekt. ArkDes ambition är att inkludera historiekritiska perspektiv i utställningen och forskarkonferensen är en möjlighet att ge inblick i arbetet bakom kulisserna.

Welcome to the annual research conference at ArkDes:
The Home, the Collective and Radical Modernism

ArkDes invites you to a half-day conference on 14 December 2022. Our five guest researchers will highlight critical new perspectives with a focus on feminist activist groups, women in architectural debate, transnational architecture projects, and new interpretations of Swedish Modernism starting from our collection.

ArkDes is currently working on a brand new collection exhibition, where we finally have the opportunity to display original materials from the museum’s own collection. As part of the project, we have invited five guest researchers who raise new narratives among the museum’s more than four million objects. It is ArkDes’s ambition to include perspectives that question history in the exhibition and the research conference is an opportunity to provide an insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

Marcelo Rovira Torres
Gästforskare

Marcelo Rovira Torres är arkitekt med stark förankring i arkitekturteori och arkitekturhistoria. Han är utbildad på KTH i Stockholm, ETH-Zürich i Schweiz och tog sin masterexamen i arkitektur på EFP-Lausanne i Schweiz. Parallellt med sin yrkesverksamhet undervisar han på masterprogrammet i arkitektur på KTH.

Marcelo Rovira Torres undersöker arkitekturprojekt i samlingarna som exemplifierar ett transnationellt utbyte och som genererat ett nätverk av arkitekter under 1900-talet, både svenska arkitekters projekt utomlands och utländska arkitekters projekt i Sverige.

Marcelo Rovira Torres is an architect and researcher in architecture theory and architecture history. Educated at KTH – Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and ETH-Zürich in Switzerland, he took his master’s in architecture at EFP-Lausanne, also in Switzerland. He teaches on the master’s programme at KTH alongside his professional work.

In his research at ArkDes, Rovira Torres will study projects in the collections that exemplify transnational architecture exchange and the network this generated during the 20th century. The research will focus on the projects of Swedish architects abroad, and foreign architects’ projects in Sweden.

Anna Lundvall
Gästforskare

Anna Lundvall är landskapsarkitekt, utbildad vid SLU Uppsala och Alnarp, samt i konstvetenskap och kulturarvsstudier vid Stockholms universitet. Parallellt med egen verksamhet undervisar hon inom landskapsarkitektur vid SLU Uppsala. 2021 var hon gästforskare hos ArkDes och undersökte samlingarna genom tema hållbarhet, med fokus på resurser, tekniker och uttryck.

Anna Lundvall undersöker hur tidskriften Hem i Sverige utvecklas under perioden för Ulla Molins redaktörskap, 1944-1966. Undersökningen utgår från tidskriftens övergripande syfte: att påverka hur och var människor bor, genom verktygen information, rådgivning och förmedling. Utifrån detta undersöks mer specifikt hur denna förmedling tar sig uttryck med ett fokus på objekt och narrativ inom kategorierna enfamiljshuset och fritidshuset, där kopplingar till ArkDes samlingar söks.

Anna Lundvall is a landscape architect, educated at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala and Alnarp, and also in Art History and Heritage Studies at Stockholm University. She teaches landscape architecture at SLU Uppsala alongside her professional work. In 2021 she was a guest researcher at ArkDes studying the collections from a sustainability perspective, with a focus on resources, techniques and expressions.

Lundvall looks at how the Swedish home magazine Hem i Sverige developed while Ulla Molin was the chief editor, 1944–1966. The study is based on the magazine’s overall purpose: to influence how and where people live, using the tools of information, advice and agencies. Based on this, more specifically it looks at how agencies work, with a focus on properties and narratives in the categories of the single-family house and the holiday home, seeking connections with ArkDes’s collections.

Rixt Hoekstra
Gästforskare

Rixt Hoekstra är en nederländsk arkitekturhistoriker som disputerat i arkitekturhistoria och specialiserat sig på genusstudier inom historiografi och arkivforskning. Rixt arbetar som föreläsare och forskare i arkitekturhistoria och arkitekturteori vid olika universitet i både Nederländerna och övriga Europa, för närvarande arbetar hon som gästföreläsare i arkitektur- och genusstudier vid KIT i Karlsruhe, Tyskland.

Rixt undersöker feministiska aktivistgrupper inom arkitektur som uppstod i Sverige under den så kallade andra feministiska vågen från 1968 till 1990-talet.

Rixt Hoekstra is a Dutch architecture historian with a PhD in the subject and a specialist in gender studies in historiography and archive research. Hoekstra is active as a lecturer and researcher in architecture history and theory at various universities in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe. She is currently a guest lecturer in architecture and gender studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

In her research at ArkDes, Hoekstra will examine feminist activist groups in architecture which emerged in Sweden during the ‘second wave’ of feminism, from 1968 to the 1990s.

Marie-Louise Richards
Gästforskare

Marie-Louise Richards är arkitekt, lärare och forskare vid Kungliga Konsthögskolan i Stockholm. Hennes arbete utforskar relationen mellan ras och arkitektur genom citering, queer, feministiska och dekoloniala metoder och tillvägagångssätt. Tillsammans med Cathryn Klasto är hon medredaktör för det kommande numret Citations, Parse journal (2023) Hon är medgrundare av Spaces of Care, Disobedience and Desire, en diskursiv forskningsplattform tillsammans med Natália Rebelo och Rado Ištok samt en del av forskningssamarbetet The Domestic Worldmaking of the Enslaved.

Marie-Louise undersöker och spårar kritiska motberättelser och läsningar av den svenska välfärdsstatens arkitektur, med utgångspunkt ur de mest vardagliga och välbekanta representationerna av folkhemmet. Lever vi i den framtid funktionalismen förställde? Vilken typ av liv har getts utrymme, och vilken typ av liv har utraderats. Vilken typ av erfarenheter har vi inte längre tillgång till?

Marie-Louise Richards is an architect, lecturer and researcher at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Her work explores the relationships between race and architecture through citation, queer, feminist and decolonial methods and approaches. Along with Cathryn Klasto, she is co-editor of the upcoming issue of Citations, Parse Journal (2023). She is the co-founder of Spaces of Care, Disobedience and Desire, a discursive research platform, alongside Natália Rebelo and Rado Ištok, and is also part of the research collaboration The Domestic Worldmaking of the Enslaved.

In her research at ArkDes, Richards will examine and trace critical counter-narratives and interpretations of Swedish welfare state architecture, starting from the most familiar and everyday representations of the “people’s home”. Are we living in the future that Functionalism envisaged? What kind of lives have been given space, and what kind have been erased? What kind of experiences do we no longer have access to?

Frida Nerdal
Gästforskare

Frida Nerdal är arkitekt och bedriver egen verksamhet inom arkitektur samt forskning och skrivande med ett särskilt fokus på kvinnor inom arkitekturhistorien. I sitt examensarbete undersökte Frida den ouppmärksammade arkitekten Elsa Sundling som resulterade i boken Arkitekt Elsa Sundling – Av lust och ohejdad vana på Balkong Förlag, 2020. 

Hösten 2021 var Frida gästforskare på ArkDes för att studera föremål i samlingen relaterade till kvinnor, transpersoner eller ickebinära. Fokus var på utvalda föremål och projekt samt även en övergripande kartläggning av kvinnor som förekommer i samlingen – allt från de med egen samling, de vars signaturer förekommer på ritningar i andras samlingar, till de vars namn nämns i artiklar.

Frida Nerdal is an architect who runs her own business in architecture, research and writing, with a particular focus on women in architecture history. In her graduation thesis, Nerdal studied the unacknowledged architect Elsa Sundling, which resulted in a book entitled Elsa Sundling – Av lust och ohejdad vana, published by Balkong Förlag in 2020. 

In autumn 2021, Nerdal was a guest researcher at ArkDes, studying objects in the collections related to women, trans and non-binary people. The focus was on selected objects and projects, and also on a general mapping of women in the collections – from those with their own collection and those whose signatures appear on drawings of other people’s works, to mentions in journal articles.

Isabelle Doucet
Professor

Isabelle Doucet är professor i Arkitekturens teori och historia på Chalmers universitet. Hennes forskning inriktar sig på relationen mellan arkitektur, urbanpolitik och socialt ansvar samt miljöfrågor. Hon synliggör detta genom både konceptuell-metodologiska undersökningar och historiska och samtida fall. Pågående forskning fokuserar på kvinnor i arkitekturen efter 1968. Hon är författare till The Practice Turn in Architecture. Brussels after 1968 (2015). Några av hennes senaste redaktionella projekt inkluderar Activism at Home. Architects Dwelling between Politics, Aesthetics, and Resistance, tillsammans med Janina Gosseye (2021), samt “Resist Reclaim Speculate: Situated Perspectives on Architecture and the City”, redigerat tillsammans med Hélène Frichot, som är ett tematiskt nummer av Architectural Theory Review (2018). Isabelle är medlem i styrgruppen för Architecture Humanities Research Association (AHRA), rådgivande styrelsemedlem i tidskriften Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge, vetenskaplig kommittémedlem i tidskriften CLARA Architecture/Recherche, och har agerat som redaktör för Architectural Histories fram till 2022.

Isabelle Doucet is Professor of Theory and History of Architecture at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. Her research focuses on the relationship between architecture, (urban) politics, and social/environmental responsibility, which she examines through both conceptual-methodological inquiries and historical and contemporary cases. Ongoing research focuses on women in architecture after 1968. She is the author of The Practice Turn in Architecture. Brussels after 1968(2015). Recent editorial projects include the edited volume Activism at Home. Architects Dwelling between Politics, Aesthetics, and Resistance, coedited with Janina Gosseye (2021), and the thematic issue “Resist Reclaim Speculate: Situated Perspectives on Architecture and the City”, coedited with Hélène Frichot, in Architectural Theory Review (2018). Isabelle is a member of the steering committee of the Architecture Humanities Research Association (AHRA), an advisory board member of the journal Dimensions. Journal of Architectural Knowledge, scientific committee member of the journal CLARA Architecture/Recherche, and has acted as an editor for Architectural Histories until 2022.
